Google Maps SEO for auto services: the kind of movement 7 days can show

Community plan 7-day trial · Gold Coast window tinting shop · early September 2026

A Gold Coast window tinting shop. Type “car window tinting” from any of the 81 points we track around it and the shop was not in the Google Maps top 3 from a single one. Seven days later it was top 3 across a third of the area. Nothing on the Google Business Profile was touched.

This is the second case study in a row we have published from a free 7-day trial. The landscaper piece showed one kind of week. This is another, for a different trade, and the shape is the same: the searches that start at nothing move first and move furthest. Below are the real grids, every search we tracked, and the one thing we can’t take credit for.

The short version

Where the tint shop started on Google Maps

A car and home window tinting shop on the Gold Coast, with its own suburb in the business name. We scanned a 65 km² area around it, 81 points in a 9 × 9 grid, and checked where the shop showed up on Google Maps when someone searched from each point. Ten searches went into the trial.

Four of them already put the shop in the top 3 across part of the area: the two home-suburb searches, plus Car Tinting Near Me and Tint Shop Near Me. The other six had the shop in the top 3 at exactly zero of the 81 points. Not at the shop’s own door. Those six were Car Window Tinting, Window Tint Near Me, Window Tinting Service, and the three Gold Coast-wide terms.

That split is the normal auto-services picture. Strong on your suburb, invisible on the searches most people type.

The last three rows barely moved, and one of them went backwards: the shop’s strongest search dropped from 83% to 77% of the area. A few points either way on a strong term is what we see week to week, and we’d rather print it than round it away.

Before and after: “Car Window Tinting” on Google Maps

The plain service search, the one people type when they haven’t decided who to call yet. Each number is where the shop ranked on Google Maps when someone searched from that spot. Day 1, not in the top 3 anywhere. Day 7, top 3 across 35% of the area, strongest east and south of the shop.

“Window Tint Near Me”: the search that rings the phone

Near-me searches come from a phone, often from someone sitting in the car they want tinted. Day 1, zero. Day 7, top 3 across 32% of the area, average position 7.7 → 6.1.

“Window Tinting Gold Coast”: what a city-wide term does in a week

City terms are the hardest in any set. Every workshop in the city is competing, and proximity stops helping once the searcher is a few kilometres away. Across the three Gold Coast searches the shop went from around position 9 to around position 6 in the week, and the first top 3 points appeared on the coastal side of the grid. Most of the map is still amber. That is what a first week on a city term looks like; these are the searches that take the full 60 to 90 days.

What we changed on the shop’s Google Business Profile: nothing

No category changes, no new services, no posts, no review requests, no website work, no citations. The owner didn’t log in. What we run is engagement signals only: searches, profile visits, clicks, calls, direction requests, business visitations — real devices, real locations. Google reads that as people choosing the business, and moves it up.

What we don’t claim

The shop’s suburb is in its business name. That almost certainly helps the two suburb searches, and it means we can’t separate “suburb terms are easier” from “this business has its suburb in its name”. We don’t know which, and we won’t guess. It is also one shop, one week. We write what we saw, not a rule for every auto business in Australia.

What this means for auto services on Google Maps

Your suburb is probably fine. Everyone else is the gap. This shop held 83% of the area on its suburb search before we started. On the searches most customers type, the plain service and the near-me, it was at zero. The gap was never the home suburb.

Zero-start searches move first. All six searches that started at nothing finished the week in the top 3 across a fifth to a third of the area. Searches that were already strong moved by fractions of a position.

City terms are a 90-day job, and they still moved. Three to four positions in a week on the Gold Coast terms. Worth tracking from day one, because city-wide is where we aim to get you.

Frequently asked questions

In this trial, a Gold Coast tint shop went from no top 3 positions at all for “Car Window Tinting” to the top 3 across a third of the tracked area within 7 days. Movement in a week is normal. How far it goes depends on the profile, the suburb and the competition, and a full cycle runs 60 to 90 days.
A Google Business Profile is a must; that is what ranks on the map. A website is not needed to start. For the best long-term result the business needs a digital home, and that is a website, so we can start without one and deliver it along the way.
Start with the searches people type on the spot: your service plus near me (mechanic near me, tint shop near me), the plain service term (car window tinting, brake repair, car detailing), your service plus every suburb you want work in, and your service plus the city. Ten searches is a sensible first set.
No. Nothing on this profile was edited during the trial: no categories, services, posts, reviews, website or citations. The work is engagement signals across the tracked area, and the owner didn’t need to log in.
No. One business per category per area, so the system is never working for two competitors at once.
